A couple things, as always, no answer required as I am sure you are busy. I heard on today's broadcast you mentioned you wifes surgery and I was happy it was as a result of an accident rather than some kind of internal issue.
Storm surge, the Washington Post had a graphic of six locations, four near Tampa and two in your area showing Helene's surge was 2 1/2 feet higher than Idala's record one in four cases and historic ones in the other two. I also saw Treasure Island, Tampa people upset because water got in their mansions but not during Idala. What I think people don't consider is normal tidal level and the fact that wind driven waves might be on top of the surge. And I don't think media ever mentions that.
Regarding people and warnings. I agree with the idea that it never happened to them so they don't think it will ever happen. But I also think that once it happens many don't believe it will happen again.
Being much older than you I would have put up my shutters if I lived there last week. Takes me a lot longer to put them up.
Yeah, sorry for leaving everyone hanging on how the surgery turned out. She's recovering well this week.
The surge difference between Helene and Idalia was stark for a few reasons. One is that while both peaked at Category 4, Helene's wind radii were much larger than Idalia, and it's fetch that matters for surge. Tide also played a major component: almost perfectly during low tide at max onshore flow in Idalia, just the opposite here. Luck ran out.
I've also heard the busted surge forecast for Tampa Bay for Ian played a role in the skepticism towards warnings.
🤣”I know it’s stress-inducing to have a tropical pain in the liver just short of jaundice…” these nuggets of humor are worth the price of admission
Enjoyed seeing you on PBS! I can see you becoming the Sanjay Gupta of climate change and severe weather events 👍
Thanks… really enjoyed being able to listen to the podcast too!
It was interesting.. Great to share w/ us!
