Hi friends, WeatherTiger here. Unfortunately, after 2 1/2 years of dodging, dipping, ducking, diving, and dodging, as of yesterday I have been stricken with the dreaded coronavirus, version BA∞.Zillion. While my symptoms are mild, with the Tropics quiet this week, I’m taking a break from the column to focus on hydration, consuming meganutrients, and watching trash TV for the next few days.
In the meantime, here’s an open thread for you Weather Fans to introduce yourselves and ask your most burning hurricane questions; I’ll write a mailbag column answering some of them in a few weeks. Keep watching the skies!
Quick question (and thought). As a retired Meteorologist, I wonder about this. We treat Tropical Cyclones as an embedded feature in the flow. But I wonder if this phenomena is more of a Basin Wide Potential to Kinetic energy balance issue. All of the Atmospheric Heat energy, I think is stored up in the Atlantic Basin heat ridge (Atlantic high Pressure) as the summer wears on. The ridge is the "pressure" in the cylinder that drives the engine. So maybe (conjecture) there are times when the overall potential energy (capability) of the entire circulation pattern around the ridge becomes out of balance with the existing circulation around the ridge, and energy is bled off into turbulence at the Tropical Cyclone scale. Just a wild conjecture. What think ye? Hope you are feeling better! Joel
So sorry to hear you are sick with that blasted virus, Ryan. As a twelve-year resident of SE FL, a weather geek all my life and a volunteer for the NWS, I really enjoy both your very detailed reports and that little bit of a twist of humor you so entertainingly provide. I’ve learned a lot from you. I’m originally from IL, where weather patterns are not quite so crazy. Weather here….from every which direction, changing by the hour. 🤪 Your reports are worth every dollar….unlike so many other things these days. Wishing you a speedy recovery. (Maybe watching a little “Housewifes of….” will help you get that necessary rest, lol!) 😴…😉
Hope you get better soon and survive the trash TV. Maybe find some old Mythbusters episodes to watch. Their always blowing up stuff. Anyway, get well soon!
Hi everyone-- thanks for all your good wishes and thoughtful questions. I'm happy to say that I've made a full recovery and things will be getting back to normal at WeatherTiger World HQ this week. (And that the Tropics remain calm for now.)
This week's column, my annual power ranking of forecast models, will be out on Wednesday on the usual schedule. See you then!
So sorry to hear. Get well soon....hurricane season is your forte!

Oh! I forgot to wish you a speedy and total recovery.
Has there been more Saharan dust than usual, so far, concerning this hurricane season?
Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.....................................smart to take this "very seriously"!!!!!!
Sorry you got COVID. Hope you feel better! GFS trying to cook a Cape Verde something in 10 days. Looking forward to your discussions. :-)
